Night and Day
Night and Day is a popular song by Cole Porter that was written for the 1932 musical Gay Divorce. It is perhaps Porter's most popular contribution to the Great American Songbook and has been recorded by dozens of musicians. Fred Astaire introduced "Night and Day" on stage. His recording of the song with the Leo Reisman orchestra was a No. 1 hit, topping the charts of the day for ten weeks. He performed it again in the 1934 film version of the show, renamed The Gay Divorcee, and it became one of his signature songs. There are several accounts about the song's origin. One mentions that Porter was inspired by an Islamic prayer when he visited Morocco. Another account says he was inspired by the Moorish architecture of the Alcazar Hotel in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.. Others mention that he was inspired by a Mosaic of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna , he had been visiting during a trip of his honeymoon in Italy. The song was so associated with Porter that when Hollywood filmed his life story in 1946, the movie was entitled Night and Day.

Night and Day
Night and Day is Joe Jackson's fifth album, released in June 1982. The title is from a Cole Porter song, and the album reflects a transition to a more sophisticated level of songwriting. The album pays tribute to the wit and style of Cole Porter. This was Jackson's only studio album to reach the Top 5 in both the UK and U.S. selling over one million copies, earning gold disc status. The track "Real Men" pointed obliquely to the city's early 1980s gay culture. A&M put considerable promotional muscle behind the album, and the resultant single "Steppin' Out" became a multi-format hit, eventually earning Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male. The album also spawned a second Top 20 U.S. hit single in "Breaking Us in Two". Jackson finished his Night and Day touring in May 1983. "Breaking Us in Two", which has some riffs similar to those in Badfinger's "Day After Day", was covered by Mandy Moore on her 2003 album Coverage. "Steppin' Out" was a Top 10 in both the UK and the U.S.. "Breaking Us in Two" was a Top 20 hit in the U.S., but charted lower in the UK. This was a rare occurrence in which one of his singles charted higher in the U.S. than the UK.
